Access Requirements for the Master's and Doctoral Degree programs
in political science and international relations:
The primary Master’s Degree access requirementis holding an undergraduate degree (1st cycle).
Candidates are accepted onto Doctoral Degree programs when meeting one of the following requirements:
- Undergraduates in one of the fields of Social Sciences that have completed their degree with an average grade equal to or above 16/20;
- Master’s degree holders in any scientific field that completed their Master’s Degrees with a minimum grade of Good. In this latter case, the IEP Scientific Council may or may not grant equivalence to some of the Master’s Degree subjects completed by candidates, providing exemption for some of the taught degree components.

Documents necessary for application
- Doctoral Degree Application Form | Post-graduate and Master's Degree Application Form ;
- 2 Recommendation Letters (facultative);
- Short Curriculum Vitae;
- Documents in proof of the aforementioned qualifications (submission of photocopies - with presentation of originals);
- Application Fees: 100€ (1st phase) or 160€ (2nd phase);
- One photograph.
Delivery of Documentation
Documents may be handed in directly to the IEP or delivered by mail.
Application Fee
Applications are subject to payment of a fee of 100€ or 160€. This payment may be done through bank transfer.
National Candidates
Entrance Examination
Candidates sit an entrance examination that involves commenting on a classical text drawn from Political Science/European Studies. One text is chosen from the two set to the student. Both texts are in English while the answer is written in Portuguese. This examination is solely indicative of the candidate’s interest in the fields of Political Science, International Relations and European Studies as well as their familiarity with English and does not assume specialist knowledge on the issues raised. A past examination paper may be requested from the Institute Secretary. The entrance examination is sat in the final application phase.
Interview
The applicant completes the admissions process with an interview designed to analyse both the documented contents of the respective application process and the individual candidate’s motivation.

Documents Needed
- Academic Essays
- Sending two Essays written by the candidate with aproximately 2500 words, in English, on a topic of Political Science or International Relations, by the candidate's choice.
- The candidate may send some academic work that meets these requirements even if it has already been assessed.
- Other documents to hand in:
- Doctoral Degree Application Form | Post-graduate and Master's Degree Application Form ;
- 2 Recommendations letters (optional);
- Abridged Curriculum Vitae;
- Documents proving the qualifications referred to (photocopy - does not replace the presentation of the original);
- Application fee: €100 (1st phase) / 160€ (2nd phase) - take into account the additional costs for international transfers to be covered by the student (contact information: posgrad.iep@iep.lisboa.ucp.pt);
- Photograph;
- Copy of the identification document – Passport.
Enrolment Procedures
1. Ground Floor: School Secretary (please tale the respective queue-ticket)
Timetable: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30 am - 12.30 pm | 2 pm - 5 pm, Thursdays from 9.30 am - 6 pm
Documentation required:
- Duly completed registration form and inquiry;
- Photograph (or 1 colour photocopy);
- Vaccination book demonstrating up-to-date tetanus vaccination;
- Photocopy of identification documentation (Identity Card, Citizenship Card or Passport) and photocopy of taxation card;
- Non-European Union international students have to deliver their study visa or residential permit through to the beginning of the 2nd semester of the 2011-2012 academic years;
- All original certification to be returned.

Timetable: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30 am - 12.30 pm | 2 pm - 5 pm, Thursdays from 9.30 am - 6 pm
Payment of enrolment and registration
The payment of enrolment and registration is carried out simultaneous with the first monthly fee, corresponding to 30 ECTS. During the month of October, this latter payment is corrected in accordance with the actual number of ECTS for which the student is enrolled.
