Academic Year's Opening Dinner and Winston Churchill Memorial Lecture

The Institute for Political Studies launched, in 2015, the Academic Year’s Opening Dinner and Winston Churchill Memorial Lecture, to allow the Alumni, Professors and Friends of the IEP to welcome the new students and to take stock of the initiatives of the year about to begin. 

The event is held in association with the International Churchill Society of Portugal, British Historical Society of Portugal, Oxford Society of Portugal and Royal British Club. We are also grateful for the High Patronage of H.E the President of the Portuguese Republic.

The first Winston Churchill Memorial Lecture took place on October 8, 2015, at Cascais' Presidential Palace of Cidadela. Professor Archie Brown - Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Oxford, gave a lecture on "Winston Churchill's Political Leadership in a Comparative Perspective." 

Also present were the Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency Rino Passigato; and the UK Ambassador, Her Excellency Kirsty Hayes.

The 2nd Winston Churchill Memorial Lecture took place on October 12, 2016, at Cascais' Presidential Palace of Cidadela. Professor David Reynolds - Professor of International History, University of Cambridge, gave a lecture on "Churchill's Sense of History."

Mr. Miguel Albuquerque, the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, recalled Churchill's visit to Madeira in January 1950.

Also present were the UK Ambassador, Her Excellency Kirsty Hayes; and the Mayor of Cascais, Mr. Carlos Carreiras

The 3rd Annual Winston Churchill Memorial Lecture and Dinner took place on November 9. The lecture was presented by Professor Antoine Capet, Professeur Émérite de Civilisation Britannnique à l'Institut d'Études Anglophones, Université de Rouen, Normandie, France, who presented the theme "Churchill and Europe".

The 4th Annual Winston Churchill Memorial Lecture and Dinner took place on September 20. The lecture was presented by Professor John Owen IV, Ambassador Henry J. and Mrs. Marion R. Taylor, Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia, on "Churchill and International Order".

We are extremely honoured that the event counted with the presence of His Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. 

Also present were UCP Vice-Rector, Professor Fernando Ferreira Pinto; UCP Former Rector, Professor Manuel Braga da Cruz; and Director of the Centre for European Studies, and former President of the European Commission, Mr. José Manuel Durão Barroso.

The 5th Annual Winston Churchill Memorial Lecture and Dinner took place on October 17. The lecture was presented by Professor Andrew Roberts, Sir Winston Churchill's Biographer, on "Churchill: Walking with Destiny".
