IEP Alumni Weekend - "Autumn Classics II"

A book, History of the Peloponnesian War; fifteenpeople chatting around a table in two-hour sessions, led by Miguel Monjardino and hosted by Henrique Burnay, president of IEP Alumni Club; walks, the surrounding sea and the charm of the Arrábida Convent, where the idea of the Institute for Political Studies began, back in 1993. This was the second activity of IEP Alumni Club, exclusively for its members. In a weekend we returned to some of the best traditions of IEP: a civilized conversation between people and different ideas. The second edition of the Autumn Classics went so well that it will come back in 2020!

The programme took place at the Arrábida Convent from November 22 to 24, 2019.

IEP Alumni Weekend - "Autumn Classics"

A book, Antigone; fifteen people chatting aroung a table in two-hours sessions, led by the creator of these programmes, Miguel Monjardino; walks, the surrounding sea and the charm of the Arrábida Convent, where the Institute began. This was the first activity of IEP Alumni Club, exclusively for its members. In a weekend we returned to some of the best traditions of IEP: a civilized conversation between people and different ideas. The first edition of the Autumn Classics went so well that it will (maybe) come back in other seasons.

The programme took place at the Arrábida Convent from November 16 to 18. 

"Numa Sociedade Aberta a discussão de forma partilhada e construtiva de ideias é a base para a afirmação da dimensão individual e colectiva do cidadão num espaço público complexo e desafiante.  No belíssimo e único espaço do Convento da Arrábida, a partir da leitura do Antígona de Sófocles, a oportunidade de reeditar os momentos únicos do IEP, numa discussão tranquila e participada sobre o tempo que temos e o tempo que queremos. Vale a pena ter estes momentos - permitem-nos reflectir, partilhar e construir".

“No Inverno, em meados de novembro, num fim-de-semana que há muito sentenciava chuva, juntou-se um grupo de colegas universitários, uns alumni, outros professores, no magnífico Convento da Arrábida. O propósito desta reunião de alumni IEP foi o de debater Grandes Clássicos de uma forma descontraída, inclusiva e contando com a participação pró-activa de todos os presentes. Muito sucintamente, a riqueza deste encontro consistiu na aprendizagem mútua e na proximidade. Sentamo-nos, lado a lado, numa mesa rectangular, rodeados por uma paisagem inspiradora verde e azul-mar, para falar sobra a Obra Antígona de Sófocles. Muitas questões foram levantadas e outras quantas reflexões debatidas. A heterogeneidade da composição do grupo contribuiu para um debate desafiante: diferentes percursos académicos, experiências profissionais díspares, amplitude da faixa etária e um elo comum - o IEP. Quando chegou a altura da despedida, ficou a promessa de continuação destes encontros para perpetuar a reflexão de Grandes Clássicos”.
