Considering the connection to the professional world a fundamental element for the acade-mic and human training, there is the possibility for any student registered on the Bachelor in Political Science and International Relations, the Master and PhD Programmes in Political Science and International Relations: Security and Defense, the Master in Governance, Leadership and Democracy Studies to carry out an extracurricular internship that allows direct and practical contact with the challenges of working life. Apart from the opportunity of a first work experience, there is also the intention of stimulating students to broaden their horizons through the approximation to national and international institutions and companies, as well as increasing the value of the Curriculum Vitae.
The IEP internships’ office provides all the necessary information and can draw up person-alised internship plans for students interested in such opportunities. It is open during regular timetable or at other times by appointment.
Given the priority attributed to this contact with companies and institutions or organizations by the Institute for Political Studies, various different means of optional interns with extra-curricular accreditation are provided both during and after their undergraduate and master’s degree programs. These are internships lasting between three and six months and dependent upon a positive evaluation on behalf of the host institution and a final report by the participating student.
How do I apply for an iep internship?
- I should read the IEP internship regulations ;
- I should approach the IEP Internship Coordinator or send an e-mail to the IEP Executive Coordinator (catia.silva@iep.lisboa.ucp.pt). In the first meeting, it will be possible to choose immediately a host internship entity and draft the application process;
- I should fill in and deliver the Pre-application Form to the IEP ;
- Depending on the target institution/company, the Internship Coordinator or myself may contact the person responsible for internships at the host entity to find out information about the opportunities for interns.
- Following a positive response from the entity that I am applying to (regarding their availability to analyse my application), should I get on with writing the Motivation Letter to this institution / company and launch the official application process.
- I will need a CV;
- These documents (CV and Motivation Letter) are subject to evaluation in a meeting with the Evaluation Coordinator and, following any subsequent evaluations, handed in (on paper) and sent by e-mail to the IEP.
- The Internship Coordinator drafts a cooperation protocol model between the IEP and the selected institution / company.
- Official student applications are formalised through sending an Application Letter to the IEP, accompanied by all the respective necessary documentation.
Following the acceptance of applications by the host entity, candidates should notify the IEP Internship Coordinator of their acceptance of the internship, fill in the Internship Form (available on the IEP site) and register for the "Internship" subject with the IEP Secretary.

Erasmus+ Internship
IEP students can apply to Erasmus internships within the framework of the Erasmus + program
Interested applicants must submit their applications by the end of May, in order to carry out the internship in the following school year.
According to the rules of the program, students can carry out an internship up to the school year following the conclusion of the course, but they must apply and see their application accepted while they are still enrolled: that is, students who finish their course in July must apply by May of that year, students who complete the course in February, must apply by May of the previous year.
The students’ applications are made directly with the IEP, who must also prepare the Training Agreement and make the contact with the Receiving Institution, after it is proposed by the student.
The allocation of scholarships depends on the funding available for the UCP, and therefore mobilities can be accepted for which there is no funding (mobilities with the Erasmus statute but the Zero scholarship).
Scholarships are also awarded on the basis of the type of internship, with priority being given to curricular internships (which does not apply to the IEP, since the internship is not compulsory), followed by extracurricular students, and finally to recent graduates.
