The MA in European Studies is distinguished by its strong commitment to personalised academic mentoring, providing students with a learning experience inspired by the Tutoring Model traditionally associated with the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Through small-group tutoring sessions, students benefit from regular interaction with highly specialised faculty members, exploring key themes related to the European Union, European integration, transatlantic relations and the strategic challenges facing Europe and the Atlantic region, in an environment that promotes critical reflection and academic dialogue.

The principal strength of the Tutorial System lies in the individual attention it offers to each student. Inspired by the long-standing academic traditions of Oxford and Cambridge, this model enables students to meet regularly with a faculty member who closely follows their academic progress, encouraging intellectual development, critical thinking and research skills. From the faculty's perspective, tutorings also provide an opportunity to engage students in topics that are particularly relevant to their own areas of expertise and research.

At the Institute for Political Studies of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, this system is implemented with flexibility, allowing it to be adapted to the specific needs of each programme and student. This approach supports personalised learning pathways, capable of responding to the diverse academic and professional interests of participants.

The topics addressed during Tutoring sessions are defined jointly by the tutor and the students. As is common practice at Oxford and Cambridge, students may, whenever appropriate, benefit from the contribution of other faculty members with specialised expertise, thereby broadening their analytical perspectives and deepening their understanding of the subjects under discussion.

In Master's and Doctoral programmes, Tutorings also play a particularly important role in supporting academic research. These sessions may contribute to the development of dissertation or thesis projects through the exploration of authors, concepts, theoretical approaches, methodologies and research questions relevant to each student's academic interests.
