The MA in Governance, Leadership and Democracy Studies is distinguished by its strong commitment to personalized academic mentoring, offering students a learning experience inspired by the renowned tutorial tradition of Oxford and Cambridge. Through small-group tutorials, students benefit from regular interaction with highly specialized faculty members, allowing them to explore key issues in governance, leadership and democracy within an environment that encourages critical reflection, intellectual exchange and academic excellence.
The principal virtue of the tutorial system lies in the individualized attention it offers each student. Drawing on the longstanding academic tradition of Oxford and Cambridge, this approach enables students to meet regularly with a faculty member who closely supports their academic development, fostering intellectual growth, critical thinking and research skills. From the tutor’s perspective, tutorials also provide an opportunity to engage students in topics closely connected to the tutor's own areas of expertise and research.
At the Institute for Political Studies of the Catholic University of Portugal, the Tutorial system is implemented with flexibility, allowing for adaptations that reflect the specific needs of each programme and each student. This approach promotes a personalized learning experience tailored to individual academic and professional interests.
The selection of tutorial topics is the shared responsibility of tutors and students, ensuring that discussions reflect students' interests and academic goals. As in the Oxford and Cambridge model, students may, when appropriate, benefit from the expertise of other faculty members for one or more tutorial sessions focused on specialized subjects.
Within Master's and Doctoral programmes, Tutorials also play a vital role in supporting academic research. They may contribute to the development of dissertation or thesis projects through the exploration of key authors, concepts, theoretical approaches, methodologies and research questions relevant to each student's field of interest.
